Moving freely between alternative-folk and traditional-country writing styles, Bet Smith works from a vast palette of worldly experiences, crafting poignant songs, rich in both mood and meaning. Often acknowledged for her clever turns of phrase, Bet gives equal priority to comedy and philosophy in songwriting and storytelling. An environmentalist at heart, Bet’s down-to-earth and back-to-the-land messages are delivered with alternating humour and gravity.

A seasoned performer, Bet has been playing to live audiences for nearly two decades. She developed a taste for the stage at the age of fifteen when she was given a local performer slot at Mariposa Folk Festival. Since then, Bet has taken her music cross country several times, playing for festival goers, coffee sippers and bar flies from coast to coast. Between songs, Bet’s personal accounts of work, life and love add interest to her music. Having worked an impressive collection of jobs from waitress to welder, farm-hand to office clerk, and dwelled in and between the extremes of downtown Toronto and an off-grid cabin in rural British Columbia, Bet has a gift for building quick and lasting relationships with fans from all walks of life.

Bet is commonly accompanied by her band at central Ontario appearances. Rob and Andrew Currie, and Sarah Girdwood join Bet on stage and in studio, collaborating to deliver a captivating full-band experience. Much more information about Bet Smith & The Currie Brothers can be found on the next page of this website.

While not engaged in musical affairs, Bet works as a blacksmith and studies soil and sustainable agriculture from her home base in rural Ontario. Bet brings a suitcase full of small, hand-forged items to gigs along with the more predictable paraphernalia. Visit the Persephone Forge page to learn more about her blacksmithing projects.

You can download North Ontario for free, but I do have one ask. Do the planet a favour and commit to better recycling habits. Whether it be washing your recyclables before pitching them in the bin, sorting them better, or separating materials from one another, make at least one, but better yet, a few small changes in your recycling ways. So much of our dirty and mismanaged recyclables end up contaminating other materials, turning the whole lot into garbage that goes to the landfill. We can do better. We learned about it in elementary school.  -Bet
