Singer-songwriter, Bet Smith and multi-instrumentalists, Rob and Andrew Currie joined forces in 2014, at first experimenting together in the recording studio, then bringing their alternative roots music to the stage. With a deep passion for environmental issues, feminist discourse and gritty honesty, Bet employs intricate phrasing and a raw, emotional voice to speak truth to power in her performance.
The Currie Brothers lift and reinforce Bet's songs with ultra-creative, swelling sound and driving rhythm. Andrew Currie stands surrounded by a circle of instruments, sometimes playing drums, bass and foot organ within the arrangement of one song. Rob Currie's masterful guitar playing ranges from ambient sound to full-throttle lead work. Honorary brother, Sarah Girdwood's haunting harmonies add a sweet richness to the mix.
Bet Smith & The Currie Brothers have played venues and festival stages between Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario. Highlights have included Sawdust City Music Festival where the band opened for Jim Cuddy and Harrow Fair on the main stage in 2017 and closed the festival at Sawdust City Brewery in 2018. The band opened to a full house for Old Man Luedecke and the Slocan Ramblers at Roots North Music Festival in 2016. Bet Smith & The Currie Brothers are included on the LCBO's Craft Beer Playlist, were regional finalists in CBC's Searchlight competition for three years in a row, and have been given rotation on the CBC as well as community radio stations across Canada, the United States and Europe. In 2017 the band received a FACTOR grant to record their single, Fires, Fires, Fires and create a performance video for the song.
As a solo artist, Bet has toured throughout Canada, taking part in Via Rail's On Board Entertainment program on several occasions, as well as playing numerous venues from Halifax, NS to Tofino, BC. She has performed at Salmon Arm's Roots & Blues Festival, Islands Folk Festival in Duncan, BC, Lose Yer Shoes in Muskoka, Ontario, and got her very first taste of the festival stage at Mariposa Folk Festival in 1998 where she was the youngest performer juried in at the local auditions. Bet's autumn 2018 single, North Ontario was chosen for Canada-wide play on CBC Radio One and CBC Music and was quickly embraced by Hunters Bay Radio in Huntsville.
